Hour of Code 2023 Celebrated at Grafton High School
Thank you to the extraordinary presenters and Hour of Code supporters! GHS students took part in a one-hour, dedicated computer science related workshop of their choice. The schoolwide event, made up of twenty-four different sessions, was structured as a mini conference for the student body. Presenters from business, education, and community organizations, introduced a variety of lessons from artificial intelligence, cryptography, gaming, coding, and developing software for the U.S. Military. Students also received firsthand opportunities to experiment with drones, micro: bits, Raspberry Pi, as well as an “Escape Room” provided by GHS Science Teacher, Barb Watkins and 3D printing by Chris Rucker, GHS Director of Bands. Five presenters joined us remotely from as far as California to the UK and two stops between. The Hour of Code is celebrated globally.
We sincerely appreciate the 30+ talented professionals from Business, Education, and Industry who so kindly shared their time, travel, and talents with our Grade 9-12 Bearcats: AGC Education, Concord University, Fairmont State University, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Generation Esports, Lockheed Martin, Marion County Public Library System, Marshall University, Mountain Leverage, NextGen Federal Systems, LLC, Pierpont Community & Technical College, TMC Technologies, University of Charleston, West Virginia University, West Virginia University ROTC, WVU Extension Preston and Taylor Counties/4H.
To help bring additional computer science activities to GHS as a schoolwide event, the Country Roads Codes Grant (WVDE) provided funding.
Thank you to WBOY and The Mountain Statesman for interviewing presenters and students. https://www.wboy.com/news/taylor/hour-of-code-inspires-grafton-hs-students-to-learn-about-computer-science/
