Grafton High School’s Youth Leadership Association attended YLA’s Youth in Government program at the West Virginia State Capitol from April 22 to April 24. Here, students served as a delegation from Grafton High School to propose model legislation to other students throughout the state of West Virginia.
This has been a process in which students had to propose legislation by suggesting an idea, researching the topic, and writing the bill months before Youth in Government. At Youth in Government, students present their bill before a committee; if it passes the committee, they present it to the full chamber of the student legislature.
Those students in attendance at this year’s Youth in Government program are Seniors Bryce Isner and Addison Nethken, who served as Senators, Seniors Sophia Austin, Jaylin Summers, Ali Wilfong, and McKenna Wilson, who all served in the House of Delegates. Sophomore Rylan Taylor served as a Senator, and Freshman Ava Leard served as part of the press corps.

Thank you to Todd Ensign for joining us remotely! Our GHS Coding Year 2 upperclassmen learned more about the WV Robotics Alliance and related secondary and post-secondary STEM opportunities.
Mr. Ensign shared his background: "I have over 20 years in professional development serving K-16 educators. I am driven by a passion to provide STEM opportunities to historically underrepresented populations across Appalachia. In my current role I manage a team of NASA educational specialists, AmeriCorps volunteers, and interns, and coordinate 13 unique robotics programs in West Virginia. Our programs impact over 20,000 students/year in a rural state of 1.8 million. My greatest strengths are identifying and building strategic partnerships to magnify the effectiveness of programs and grants, and designing and running large-scale events such as the Mountain State Invitational, an international robotics festival and tournament."
Thank you to the K12 Speakers Bureau for helping us to connect with experts in the field!

Thyroid Awareness Day at Grafton High School - This Friday!
At Grafton High, we believe no one should face life’s toughest battles alone. 💜
This Friday, April 24th, we’re standing together in support of one of our own students who is bravely fighting thyroid cancer.
Here’s how you can help show your support:
💗 Wear pink, purple, or teal
💜 Bring a donation to help support the family
Because here, we’re more than just a school... we’re a family. 🐾
All proceeds will go directly to supporting the student and their family during this time.

🌎 GHS Students Shine at the WV World Language Showcase 🌎
We are so proud of our students who participated in the WV World Language Showcase at Fairmont State University. They did an amazing job representing Grafton High School with their talent, hard work, and love for languages and cultures.
This year was especially meaningful because we had more schools and more students from across West Virginia. It was a wonderful day to celebrate world languages and the hard work of our students.
We would like to thank Dr. John Stallings for serving as Master of Ceremonies and for his support of West Virginia world language students. We also appreciate Drema Gainer for helping with Spanish Trivia, Nancy Maloney for helping with French Trivia, and Allison Horne for capturing the memorable moments. We also thank our parent chaperones for their support during the event and the Grafton Rotary Club for providing lunch for our Grafton students and student helpers.
Thank you also to our Grafton High School parents for your support of our students and our Spanish program.
👏 Congratulations to all our students.
